Key Highlights

  • Weekly crypto commits fell about 75% since early 2025, with weekly active developers down to roughly 4,600.

  • GitHub said it added 36M+ developers in 2025 (180M+ total) and platform-wide commits rose about 25% year over year.

  • GitHub’s Octoverse report also flagged a sharp rise in AI-focused building, with adoption of LLM tooling and AI deployment workflows growing quickly.

Open-source activity in crypto has cooled significantly since early 2025, while AI-related development continues to accelerate on GitHub. Artemis figures cited in recent reports show weekly crypto commits falling from roughly 850,000 to about 210,000, with weekly active developers down to around 4,600.

GitHub’s Octoverse 2025 report shows the opposite trend at the platform level: more than 36 million new developers joined in 2025, bringing the total to over 180 million, and overall commits rose by about 25% year over year. GitHub also pointed to a surge in AI development, including rapid growth in repositories importing LLM SDKs, alongside broader increases in Jupyter notebooks and Docker-based deployment workflows.

Some analysts have described the crypto developer base as consolidating rather than disappearing, with longer-tenured contributors accounting for a larger share of commits as casual and new entrants cycle out.
