Zcash Team Splits from ECC: Zashi Rebrands to Zodl

Zcash’s mobile wallet Zashi is being renamed Zodl after the wallet team split from the Electric Coin Company (ECC) and reorganized as an independent group. The developers behind the app, the same crew closely associated with Zcash’s original engineering work, are now operating under a new entity called Zcash Open Development Lab (ZODL).

For users, the change is mostly cosmetic. The team says the next app update will automatically switch the branding from Zashi to Zodl, without forcing people to move funds, reinstall anything, or rotate seed phrases. Wallet balances, history, and compatibility with the Zcash network are expected to remain intact.

The rebrand follows a deeper governance and control dispute that boiled over in January 2026, when the entire team resigned. ECC still exists as a legal organization, but the engineers who built and maintained much of the recent wallet and privacy tooling are no longer part of it. Zcash itself hasn’t forked, and ZEC is unchanged. The shake-up is about who leads development and where the core product work now lives.
